What is Tales from the Genome?

Are there any major course-wide projects?

Each student will be required to create a ten minute oral presentation using PowerPoint or a similar piece of software that discusses a recent development in genetics or a genetic disorder of their choice. The project will be due on the last day of the course.

What is class normally like?

Typically, class consists of lecture periods followed by interactive hands-on labs. Students will be able to experience a variety of laboratory techniques used by research scientists including gel electrophoresis, PCR amplification, restriction enzyme digest preparation, DNA extraction, and much more.

What labs can I expect?

Previous laboratory experiences have seen students genetically modify a strain of E. coli to glow green in the presence of UV radiation, ascertain if samples of cornmeal have been genetically modified, use candy to illustrate DNA and protein synthesis, and observe chromosmes from their own cheek cells.

Is there any assigned homework?

When given, take-home assignments are usually brief passage readings from a textbook on biotechnology or another book relating to genetics. Assessment questions and writeups are typically assigned after most labs. Assignments will be submitted through Moodle 2 on the Lynchburg College website.

Would you rather fight one hundred duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck?

Assuming they are proportionately equal in mass, the horse-sized duck would be easier to restrain and incredibly slow, making it the optimal choice.
